Announcement of the Award Read by Dr. Frank D. Ferris, Chair of the AACE Advisory Committee 2010-2011:

Born India in 1951, Dr. Ajit Sachdeva received his medical training at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He completed a Surgery Residency at the Hospital of Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and has held specialty certification in Surgery since 1981.

Dr. Sachdeva began his process to specialize in medical education and academic administration in 1995 by participating in the Harvard Macy Institute Program for Leaders in Medical Education in Boston. This was but the first of multiple courses that prepared him to be the educational leader he is today.
Today, Dr. Sachdeva is an Adjunct Professor of Surgery at The Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. He is the Founding Director of the Division of Education, American College of Surgeons where he has been responsible for development and implementation of innovative education programs for surgeons, surgical residents and medical students, including:

  • Program for Accreditation of Education Institutes (Simulation Centers)
  • Redesign of the Annual Clinical Congress
  • Program for Verification of Knowledge and Skills
  • Development of innovative self-assessment, continuous professional development, and competency-based education programs
  • He has initiated several national research and development projects in surgical education

Dr. Sachdeva has long been an active member of AACE. In 1993-1994, he facilitated the development of a new strategic plan for AACE. As President-Elect in 1994-1995, he chair the AACE Annual Meeting with a record number of attendees and enhanced the activities of several of the AACE Special Interest Sections. As President from 1995-1996, he facilitated the development of a national mentoring program and created the first web pages for AACE.

With more than 100 publications, Dr. Sachdeva was recently profiled by Jordan Cohen, President Emeritus, American Association of Medical Colleges as one of nine International Medical Graduates who have "improved health care delivery, provided care to medically underserved populations, made groundbreaking discoveries in biomedical research, introduced new surgical techniques, pioneered innovative methods, and more..."

Dr. Sachdeva has been honored with multiple awards, including the AACE Samuel C Harvey Lecturer Award in 2006, for which he delivered the presentation “Careers in Cancer Education: Infinite Opportunities during Challenging Times."
The Advisory Committee is delighted to honor Dr. Ajit Sachdeva with the Margaret Hay Edwards Award for 2011.
